Going Green at the Ranch

Flying B Bar Ranch goes green every day! What do we mean by that? Every day, we make a genuine effort to reduce our environmental impact and adopt sustainable practices. We believe that there’s no such thing as standing still, only moving forward, and that’s why we regularly evaluate all our operations to keep our commitment to going green. That includes programs to reduce waste, use more environmentally friendly materials and packaging, and promote our natural soil health and biodiversity out here at the ranch.  Flying B Bar is transparent about our environmental practices, and we’re committed to continuously improving them.

So what’s greenwashing?

Greenwashing, on the other hand, refers to the practice of misleading customers about a company’s environmental practices. This can involve making false or exaggerated claims about the environmental benefits of a product or service, using vague or meaningless environmental terms, or selectively highlighting one small aspect of a company’s environmental efforts while ignoring larger issues.

Greenwashing is a marketing tactic used by some companies to make it appear as if they are more environmentally conscious than they actually are, in order to appeal to eco-conscious consumers. Unfortunately, it can be difficult for consumers to distinguish between genuine environmental commitments and greenwashing claims, which can undermine efforts to promote real sustainability.

For example, a company might claim that their beef is “sustainably sourced” or “ethically raised” without providing any concrete evidence to support those claims. Alternatively, a company might focus on one small aspect of their production process, such as using energy-efficient lighting in their barns and outbuildings, while ignoring larger environmental or animal welfare concerns.

It’s important for consumers to be aware of greenwashing in the cattle industry and to look for reliable third-party certifications or independent verification of sustainability claims. That’s why we sought certification by the American Grassfed Association all those years ago; to give our customers peace of mind that they are buying beef that is better for the planet, better for the cattle, and better on the dinner table. Just like our ecosystem, it’s a cycle, and one that we can and should sustain through environmentally friendly practices.

How has Flying B Bar Ranch gone green?

Farms and ranches are an essential component of our worldwide movement to go green, and Flying B Bar is committed to adopting sustainable practices that reduce our environmental impact. Here’s a few ways we’ve made the commitment to go green:

  1. Implemented rotational grazing: Rotational grazing involves moving cattle to different pastures on a regular schedule. This can help to reduce overgrazing, improve soil health, and promote biodiversity.
  2. Reduced water usage: We implemented water conservation practices, such as smart water systems, collecting rainwater, and repairing leaks when we find them.
  3. Use natural fertilizers: Instead of using synthetic fertilizers, which can contribute to water pollution and other environmental problems, we use natural fertilizers like compost or manure.
  4. Planting trees and native vegetation: Planting trees and native prairie grasses helps to prevent erosion, provide habitat for wildlife, and sequesters carbon.
  5. Supporting local ecosystems: We support local ecosystems by preserving or restoring wetlands, prairies, and other natural areas, providing habitat for native wildlife.

We are always looking for ways to innovate and improve our systems as we move towards a more sustainable world, and your support makes it possible. We couldn’t do it without you.
